Lolsnake, also known as Danielle Lumma Rahal, is a Berlin-based Iraqi-American DJ and visual artist. As the founder of the Berlin queer party series Weeeirdos, which holds an ongoing residency at Säule Berlin, Lolsnake has carved out a unique space in the city’s vibrant music scene.
In their special podcast for Pornceptual, Lolsnake dives into the multifaceted layers of dance music. Their usual style blends metallic techno, angelic trance, squishy acid, and cosmic bleep. For this special mix, they put together a mood that is a little bit darker and energetic yet sexy – “something that you can either pre-party with or watch pornography to”.
The series is presented by Rakans: Beirut-born and Berlin-based, Rakans, founder of the Queer collective Rawmantique. He is also a Pornceptual resident. Rakans not only curates the podcast series but also conducts interviews with participating artists.
Rakans: If I was walking in the jungle, and I saw a snake, I would NOT yell LOL!The question is though, Why LOL? And why SNAKE?
LOLSNAKE: Years ago, I would be on the dance floor feeling like a mischievous and playful serpent. I liked to imagine myself as a deadly humorous reptile from another planet. Snakes are very different from every being that walks on legs. They are beautiful, mysterious, and thrilling. We love them because they symbolize something to us â the snake dragon that emerges in our psychedelic subconscious as the double helix DNA. LOL for the fun, the love, the bitterness that turns into humor. I have faced many life challenges and, with sadness, I would not have been able to cope. But with humor, I flourish. I like to be a nice, mischievous character, seducing people on the dance-floor with playfulness â I’m a good serpent đ
Rakans: I love that youâre a âweirdoâ, and that youâre a representation of everything that is punk in our community. How do you present your culture through your collective âWeeeirdos“?
LOLSNAKE: The expression of this is very much seen in the curation of the events and the lineups. Over the years, I have been very FLINTA-preferred. We all know that when you curate the lineup, you are simultaneously curating the crowd that follows.
Iâve been organizing my events since 2017 in Berlin, and from the beginning, I have worked primarily with local Berlin acts. Weeeirdos started out as a series of raves and underground DIY concerts. I booked friends and friends of friends. It would happen like this: someone would be describing their passion for music and their collection on a night out, and the next day I would offer them their first DJ set at my next party. A lot of artists had their first time playing in front of a crowd at my party. I would say thatâs very punk. I would tell them: if you trust yourself to do the performance, then I trust you. Fuck it â taking risks is the best way forward when organizing events. It shows the audience that the platform also belongs to them, and it shows confidence in an individual at the very beginning of their artistic expression.
Rakans: If thereâs one advice you could give the younger generation thatâs seeking genuine connection beyond social media platforms, what would this advice be?
LOLSNAKE: Do go to DIY events and off-location parties. Donât look for community initially at bigger nights out with major headlinersâgo to smaller, local independent parties. Attend smaller nights during the week at the bigger clubs. Engage with dance floors that feature niche lineups of the music you are passionate about. Personally, I love going out to events alone. It gets me out of my comfort zone, allows me to engage more naturally with new people, and gives me new impressions of what is happening within the community I’m already involved in.
