“The journey of embracing one’s identity as a leatherman is a deeply personal and transformative experience, as Timo Rissanen eloquently reflects on his own path. From the initial discovery of Tom of Finland’s empowering artworks to fully embracing his own desires and fetishes, Rissanen’s journey encapsulates the evolution of leather culture over decades. While rooted in historical contexts, leather culture today is celebrated for its diversity and inclusivity, spanning continents and cultures. Rissanen’s exploration of masculinity and femininity within the leather community challenges stereotypes and invites a nuanced understanding of gender expression. Through vulnerability and courage, he asserts that softness does not compromise masculinity but rather amplifies it, calling for respect and unity within the diverse leather community.
The narrative also delves into the complexities of navigating identity within the leather community, as illustrated by Rissanen’s encounter at a fetish dance party. Despite occasional challenges and uncertainties, his journey of self-discovery unfolds through a playful yet profound photoshoot with photographer Thomas Evans. By embracing both masculine and feminine elements, Rissanen confronts societal norms and celebrates the fluidity of gender expression. Through introspection and dialogue, he advocates for acceptance and understanding within the leather community, emphasizing the importance of unity amidst diversity. As Rissanen aptly concludes, embracing one’s unique identity as a leatherman is a continual process of self-discovery and empowerment, rooted in care and love for one another.” – written by Timo Rissanen
