“Unease is a photographic essay born from a collaboration between photographer Jonathan Daniels and model Jessie T. Hatcher. Shot in both vintage SX-70 Polaroid film and high-resolution digital, the juxtaposition of the image types reflects the extremes of the subject’s state in the scenes. In some images, the subject is clearly distraught, anguished, fearful, and lost, yet in others, they are clearly aroused. The source of the anguish is not apparent from the images – perhaps a painful recovery from alcohol or drugs, or maybe the result of mental anguish from loss or separation. The arousal is, perhaps, more understandable. The relationship between fear and adrenaline, the fight and flight response, is closely linked to arousal in the absence of normal sexual stimulus. The body’s paradoxical response to such circumstances adds to the overall disquiet in these images.”
