The image of Saint Sebastian has long represented the image of gay masculinity itself. Lean, in the nude, torn into by phallic arrows, the figure of Sebastian is torn apart by the male gaze turned on itself. The direction of the male gaze into himself is the obsession, celebrity and bane of the gay Sebastian. Mirrors cut into hundreds of tiny pieces reflect and deflect the gaze: cut into him metaphorically and emergent out of himself, into the world.
