Eva Allein is a Berlin-based photographer who began her artistic journey in an unexpected, unwanted setting: the club toilets of the city’s vibrant nightlife scene. Initially taking photos out of boredom with her phone instead of taking unnecessary lines, she soon discovered a rich tapestry of human emotion and transformation within these confined spaces. Her work captures the microcosm of Berlin club toilets, documenting everything that happens inside a club’s stall.
Eva views club toilets as metaphysical portals: “Club Toilets are Portals: you are not the same person when you come out of it; your mind is in a different metaphysical state as well as your body. Perceptions are enhanced, accelerated or slowed down, magic and mistakes are at hand. Shall we learn from whatever we put up our noses or shall we just be passive and let it take control? Is it just for recreation or is it our fleeting tiny DIY quantum leap? Whatever our intention is, club toilets are always, unapologetically, full.”
