Established as an interdisciplinary queer art underground, The Death of Glitter is founded on the principles of creative rebellion and self liberation. A quarterly happening in Cape Town, South Africa, the event embodies Queer nightlife as radical resistance to create a space that is both inclusive and wildly unpredictable. It holds space for LGBTQIA+ and marginalised bodies to come together in celebration of their being, identity, self representation and right to exist. This is especially important given the violence that Queer bodies, particularly Queer bodies of Colour, still experience on a daily basis in Cape Town but also globally. Harking on the history of the late 80s clubkid movement, DoG was born to fill the city’s void of an accessible queer underground where you can just fucking dance.
This body of photographic work, titled ‘Of Human Bondage’, was created by an entirely Queer crew in collaboration with The Death of Glitter. The images act as resistance in the face of homophobia, heteronormativity, taboo and stereotypes surrounding LBGTQIA+ sexuality and self expression.
